Bad manners, rudeness and outright disrespect in the workplace have deep costs. It affects more than two-thirds of all employees and leads to lost productivity, high turnover, poor customer service, and a dampened bottom line.
“As employees exchange seemingly inconsequential inconsiderate words and deeds, productivity and collaboration plummet, and norms are shredded,” said Dr. Christine Porath, an associate professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, and author of Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace.
“If employees are behaving badly toward one another, it means that individuals and teams are losing time, effort, energy, focus, creativity, loyalty and commitment.”
Dr. Porath will discuss the perils of and antidotes to workplace incivility at The Leadership Lectures presented by the Center for Leadership at Florida International University (FIU). The lecture will be held Wednesday, March 10, 2018, from 10am-11am, at the FIU Graham Center Ballrooms, followed by a reception and book-signing. The first 50 people through the doors will receive a complimentary copy of Christine Porath's book, Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace.
Dr. Porath will also discuss how “simple stuff” such as kind suggestions, gratitude, and her three fundamentals for civility – smiling, building relationships with subordinates, and listening – can enhance a team’s effectiveness and cultivate a friendlier, thriving workplace.
Porath is a frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review and Psychology Today, and has written articles for New York Times Sunday Review, Wall Street Journal, McKinsey Quarterly, and Washington Post. She has also presented or consulted for major industry leaders such as Google, United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Pixar, Genentech, Expedia, the U.S. departments of Labor, Treasury, and Justice, and the National Security Agency.
Porath received her Ph.D. from Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and earned her bachelor's degree in economics from College of the Holy Cross.
