Leading change: Get in the driver’s seat

Dynamic, necessary, exciting, challenging, promising, scary, difficult. These were some of the responses participants provided during a recent leadership development workshop when asked to complete the phrase “Change is . . . .” So, how would you define change in just one word?

As we gear up for a dynamic spring season of programs and events, effectively leading change – whether personal or organizational – is at the forefront. Our upcoming leadership development programs in May, The Senior Executive Leaders Program and The Women Leaders Program, provide tools for executives to become more effective change agents in their organizations.

In this issue of Leading, you will find articles that present a two-pronged approach to leading change. Before any major goal can be achieved, it is first necessary to clearly define it, proposes UPS President, Romaine Seguin, this issue’s Featured Leader. In Research You Can Use, The Center’s Academic Director, Dr. Nathan Hiller, shares findings on how leaders can give subordinates “voice”, simultaneously making them feel valued while leveraging their know-how to inform and improve organizational processes.

We invite you to read the articles or join us at any of our upcoming events, and share with us how you have used the insights gained in your own leadership journey. On behalf of all at The Center,

Mayra E. Beers, Ph.D.
Director, FIU Center for Leadership
