Leadership Institute for Teachers M-DCPS Teacher-Leaders
Launched in June 2015, the Leadership Institute for Teachers (LIFT) program is designed to improve, challenge, and support teacher leaders in developing the leadership skills and behaviors necessary to guide instructional improvements in their respective schools. During the program, teacher-leaders who serve as instructional leaders, coaches, and/or department chairs in their respective schools are able to acquire leadership tools that they call upon in order to lead more effectively and bring about strong, positive student outcomes.
The LIFT program’s synergy with the Principals Leadership Development Program (principals attending the program each nominate a teacher-leader in their school to attend LIFT) is an important part of building a strong shared leadership culture within each school to significantly facilitate teaching strategies and learning outcomes within the school.
LIFT assists teacher-leaders in developing skills around the seven domains of the Teacher Leader Model Standards* which will allow them to become more effective in their roles and in effecting positive change in their spheres of influence, while maintaining a focus on student learning and achievement. Standards addressed in the program include
- Fostering a Collaborative Culture to Support Educator Development and Student Learning
- Accessing and Using Research to Improve Practice and Student Learning
- Promoting Professional Learning for Continuous Improvement
- Facilitating Improvements in Instruction and Student Learning
- Improving Outreach and Collaboration with Families and Community
