Dr. Adams says to be in your “A” game, a true leader has to have the “Four C’s.”

  • Competence “Know your job thoroughly, your exact role and make sure you have the skills needed,” he says. “Competence also means a sense of self, knowing your own strengths and how you operate.”
  • Compassion “Sometimes it seems as if a typical business mindset does not embrace true compassion,” points out Dr. Adams. “But the best business leaders are compassionate people, caring about helping others.”
  • Commitment “A true leader realizes that positive moves don’t always bring an immediate benefit,” he says. “But he or she is able to commit to a philosophy and to seeing a strategy through.”
  • Collaboration “If you only care about ‘fast,’ you can do it by yourself. But if you care about ‘far,’ do it with others,” Dr. Adams recommends. “No person, no organization, even no country can do it alone. There is power in collaboration.”

Sustained by his strong family ties and guided by uncompromising spiritual values, Dr. Adams says true leadership begins with having a good heart. “A true leader loves what he or she’s doing, and goes forward with a good heart to do the best for others,” he says.
